Church History
 
 
  The Methodist church has a long history in what is now the Manhattan area.
 
 
Manhattan Mission of the Evangelical Church (Manhattan United Methodist Church), c. 1918
Manhattan Mission of the Evangelical Church (Manhattan United Methodist Church), c. 1918
• 1834 the first settlement of the area included Methodist families.
• 1858 these families organized Manhattan Episcopal Church.
• 1883 original Episcopal Church built.
• 1892 Manhattan Mission of the Evangelical Church purchased a building.
• 1918 Manhattan Episcopal Church building was moved to present site (see photo).
• 1946 The Evangelical Church became First United Brethren Church.
• 1966 Education building added to Manhattan Episcopal Church.
• 1968 Evangelical United Brethren Churches joined with Methodist Churches, forming the Manhattan United Methodist Church.
