The Methodist church has a long history in what is now the Manhattan area.

Manhattan Mission of the Evangelical Church (Manhattan United Methodist Church), c. 1918

• 1834 the first settlement of the area included Methodist families.
• 1858 these families organized Manhattan Episcopal Church.
• 1883 original Episcopal Church built.
• 1892 Manhattan Mission of the Evangelical Church purchased a building.
• 1918 Manhattan Episcopal Church building was moved to present site (see
photo).
• 1946 The Evangelical Church became First United Brethren Church.
• 1966 Education building added to Manhattan Episcopal Church.
• 1968 Evangelical United Brethren Churches joined with Methodist Churches,
forming the Manhattan United Methodist Church.
